American Eskimo Dog Association

The Finger Lakes American Eskimo Dog Association was formed in 1990 by a small group of people who love the American Eskimo Dog. They had been showing but there were no clubs in the central New York area so thought that they would fix that. They started off with just a handful of people and have grown a little in the past 19 years (WOW, 19 years!! Where has the time gone!) We started out doing conformation shows and obedience shows but now just do conformation because we don't have the members to do obedience any longer.

We now do 3 weekends of all-breed shows a year. Until this year, we had two but in 2009, we will starte having a third show. Our normal shows are in May and July and we have them at the Locke Volunteer Fire Station in Locke, NY. It is a wide open field plus a building to hold raffles. Plus the Fire Station uses our shows as fund raisers and provide food for the shows (breakfast sandwiches in the mornings and burgers and dogs for lunch). And our shows would not be complete without the Muffin Lady - she brings her homemade wares to our shows and they are fantastic!! There is also another building to use when it rains and for the shows that we are starting in October. In addition to the breakfast and lunch that the fire station does, we have a chicken barbecue on Saturday night of our July show. One of our members is marrying a caterer and he does a fantastic chicken barbecue - chicken, ribs, salt potatoes, salads, and dessert. It is a chance for everyone to sit around and shoot the breeze, No need to run off to get supper when it is right there on the show site. We have a great show with great people and we encourage everyone to come.

The Finger Lakes American Eskimo Dog Association
will be holding
4 UKC All-Breed Conformation Shows
On
July 17, 18 & 19, 2009
and
October 31 & November 1, 2009
in
Locke, NY

Judges for the July show are: Pamela Moore, Helena Engelauf, Richard Yates, and Donna Blews. More information can be found by going to the flyer

And right at the moment, we have Joe and Tina Camp signed up for the October show. More on that show to come.

At the July 2007 show, we had a surprise when Barbara Deigan came to show her last eskie in obedience. Barb has been in eskies since 1971 and has been an icon of the breed for as long as I have been in the breed. She is also a wonderful lady with a great sense of humor (ask Pat O'Donnell about Moodus, CT). We had a few "old time" eskie people at the show and got them together for a picture. I am glad that Barbara came to the show and we were able to get a picture because Barbara died in November 2007. We were shocked! She will really be missed!

From left to right, Sue O'Donnell, Eleanor Cassidy Main, myself, Bill Brown, Pat Brown and Pat O'Donnell with Barb Deigan on the scooter in the middle. We were so lucky that we took this picture as Barb died in October at the age of 69. We will miss her alot!!

What a great show we had in May 2009!!! We had 132 dogs entered for the weekend - a record for us - and everyone seemed to have a great time, despite the bad weather at times. Just before Best in Show on Saturday, we had torrential downpours and everyone got soaked. On Sunday it was so bitterly cold!! The sun was out most of the time but it was so very, very cold!! Poor Jeanne Heger was judging in a sleeveless tank top with a lacy cover up and was actually turning blue!! But everyone seemed to have a great time.

This year we are starting something new: The fire company who does food for our shows, have asked us if we would consider another show during the year. We are one of their best fundraisers and they would like us to do another show so we said, "why not?". So starting this fall, we are going to have a third show during the year and it will be held the last weekend in October. The buildings will be finished so we will be inside and there will be heat and the Empire Dog Club is going to have a show at the same time so it will be a five show weekend. It should be great fun!!

At the July 2004 show, we started a new tradition - a rotating trophy for "The Best of the Best of Show". It is called the "Edgar Gray Memorial Rotating Trophy" and is named after one of the founding members of our club and the father of the president of our club. It is an all mahogany trophy made especially for us by the company that Renee O'Donnell use to work for and it is beautiful!! We will put a plaque on the base with the name of the winner each year and the owners can keep the trophy for a year and bring it back the following year. Here is a picture of the trophy itself. Isn't it beautiful?

This year was a different year as there were only two dogs up for the honoro of taking the trophy home. One was a beautiful Briard who won 3 Best in Shows (Friday night and both shows on Saturday) and a miniature American Eskimo who won Best in Show on Sunday. The Briard was a very beautiful dog and I am happy to say that he is the one who took the trophy home. The judges for this win were Don Well, Betty Umberto-Wells and Joe Camp. The other two judges for the weekend (Ron and Phyllis Lambert) had to leave before the weekend was over so Joe Camp was brought in to break up the tie. The trophy was taken home by Elana Sacilowski from Bennington Center, NY and her beautiful Briard, CH Briaramour's United We Stand. They can keep it for a whole year and then bring it back or send it back for next July's show.

Since there was only one other Best in Show dog this weekend and it was my dog, I am going to post a picture here. This is Gr. Ch. Cir-B Miracles Nutn Dirty Goin On, aka Mona. It was her (and mine!) Best in a Multibreed Show and I am still in shock! She is a beautiful young lady and Judge Betty Umberto Wells said that she had been looking at her all weekend but didn't get to touch her until Sunday's show.

THE REMARKABLE TINA CAMP!!

(Thanks, Tina, for being such a good sport!)
